Root Canal Treatment

Hearing your dentist say, “I think you need Root Canal Treatment” can worry many people who assume it’s going to be uncomfortable because of scare stories they may have heard. But the truth is that this treatment removes pain and infection and actually makes you feel better!

Root canal therapy can help save a tooth that is infected or grossly decayed when the only other option may be to have it taken out. If your dentist recommends root canal therapy and you feel that you may not be able to proceed with the treatment under local anaesthetic alone, then to ensure your peace of mind Main Street Dental Clinic can offer you the option of intravenous sedation to make your experience as comfortable as possible. Our priority here at Main Street Dental Clinic is to put you at ease and ensure you’re happy to return, Dr Razik and Dr Alvi will ensure that your root canal therapy is as relaxing as possible.

What to Expect

Appointment Length : 40-70 minutes

Root canal therapy is normally done in a single visit and the tooth and the affected area are fully anaesthetised throughout the entire procedure.

However, if your tooth is severely infected, a steroid and antimicrobial medication may be placed inside the tooth to decontaminate it for one or two weeks before completing the treatment. If this occurs, then the tooth will be restored temporarily to prevent it being contaminated by your saliva.

DURING YOUR ROOT CANAL THERAPY

When full anaesthesia (total numbness) is achieved, dental-dam (a thin membrane) is placed to isolate the tooth from the rest of the mouth prior to beginning the procedure. This allows the dentist to ensure the tooth is kept free of bacteria and microorganisms whilst keeping the patient comfortable. Frequently, once the local anaesthetic and dental-dam have been applied, the patient is blissfully unaware of any treatment being performed.

AFTER YOUR ROOT CANAL THERAPY

Following treatment, you may experience slight discomfort from the treated teeth which usually lasts for a couple of days and is easily managed by normal analgesics. Dr Razik / Dr Alvi or your usual dentist will prescribe your final restoration. Following successful completion of Root Canal Treatment, we normally recommend a crown restoration at a future visit as Root Canal Treated teeth have a higher chance of fracture, even if the procedure was successful.
