Oral Surgery

Making ‘Goodbye’ as comfortable as possible. Unfortunately for various reasons teeth may require extraction. When that decision is made, here at Main Street Dental Clinic, Coatbridge, we strive to make such experiences as painless and forgettable as possible. We also can incorporate the use of IV sedation to aid this process.

Dr Razik and Dr Alvi may determine a tooth needs extracted for a number of reasons such as advanced decay, periodontal disease, broken down teeth due to trauma, a tooth that is positioned badly in the mouth (impacted) or for Orthodontic treatment purposes.

Missing teeth may have negative effects on your dental health due to the change it will introduce to your chewing habits, jaw health and movement of neighbouring teeth into the space. Due to these complications, treatment options to replace extracted teeth will be discussed.

What to Expect

Initially, your tooth and the surrounding gum will be numbed with local anaesthetic. We will then check the area is completely numb prior to beginning the tooth removal process. It is important to note that during the procedure you will feel pressure but NOT pain. If you do feel uncomfortable or want us to stop at any point during the process of tooth extraction please let us know right away!!

Post- Operative Instructions

Following the extraction of your tooth, it is essential for a blood clot to both form and stabilise as it establishes the healing process of the socket (the extraction site). To aid this you will be instructed to bite down on cotton gauze for 10mins or so to stop the bleeding immediately after the tooth is removed, you will also be advised against exercise, smoking, drinking alcohol or rinsing your mouth for 48hrs.

After Your Appointment

Bruising, swelling and discomfort after a tooth extraction are normal and continue for around 2 days before symptoms subside. Take pain medication before the anaesthetics wear off and use ice packs to keep the swelling to a minimum. If antibiotics are prescribed, continue to take them until the course is complete even if your symptoms have resolved.

You can eat normally as soon as you feel comfortable to do so, stick to plenty of nutritious fluids and soft food. It is essential to continue with your dental hygiene, such as tooth brushing and flossing, as this will speed the healing process and help keep your mouth clean.

You should feel back to your normal self a few days after the extraction. Should you have any persistent bleeding, continued swelling, severe pain, reaction to a medication prescribed by us or any other issues, please call Main Street Dental Clinic for advice.
