Ceramic Crowns
Do you have a large filling or a tooth that had root canal treatment? Or maybe you don’t like the appearance of a tooth and you want to improve its aesthetics, but a Veneer wasn’t the right choice? Perhaps you took a bite on a caramel or crusty bread a few months ago and a tooth has broken down, then I think it’s time to consider a crown!
What are Ceramic Crowns?
Crowns are permanent full coverage custom made devices, that are used to restore a tooth that is likely to break or is not restorable by traditional filling. Continued research of the technology has advanced the strength and appearance of ceramic crowns making them the leading choice in restoring damaged teeth to their former glory.

What to Expect
2 Appointments
FIRST APPOINTMENT
At your first appointment with Main Street Dental Clinic in Coatbridge, we will administer full local anaesthesia for the tooth being treated. Dr Maha Razik / Dr Munsoor Alvi or your usual Dentist will then prepare the tooth conservatively (a reduction of 1.5 to 2mm to be precise!) to create room for the ceramic crown.
After careful assessment of the shape and contour, an impression of the prepared tooth will be taken. This impression will allow the lab ceramist to create and calibrate a ceramic crown that looks and feels like your natural tooth.
At the end of the first appointment, a temporary crown will then be created, polished and cemented. The purpose of the temporary crown is to protect your tooth from sensitivity, maintain the gum line and, most importantly, to prevent opposing teeth growing into the space we have created. Whilst you have the temporary crown, you’ll want to avoid sticky food to prevent the temporary crown dislodging. If the temporary crown does come out, then come visit us at our clinic in Coatbridge and we’ll secure it back in.
SECOND APPOINTMENT
During your second visit, the temporary crown will be removed, and the final ceramic crown will be tried in and examined for perfection of fit and aesthetics. Once you have approved of your crown, adhesive will be applied, and the crown will be bonded onto the tooth. You’ll then be provided with all the necessary instructions to take proper care of your new crown.
All hail to the queen or king! (because you are wearing a crown now J)

DURING YOUR ROOT CANAL THERAPY
When full anaesthesia (total numbness) is achieved, dental-dam (a thin membrane) is placed to isolate the tooth from the rest of the mouth prior to beginning the procedure. This allows the dentist to ensure the tooth is kept free of bacteria and microorganisms whilst keeping the patient comfortable. Frequently, once the local anaesthetic and dental-dam have been applied, the patient is blissfully unaware of any treatment being performed.
AFTER YOUR ROOT CANAL THERAPY
Following treatment, you may experience slight discomfort from the treated teeth which usually lasts for a couple of days and is easily managed by normal analgesics. Dr Razik / Dr Alvi or your usual dentist will prescribe your final restoration. Following successful completion of Root Canal Treatment, we normally recommend a crown restoration at a future visit as Root Canal Treated teeth have a higher chance of fracture, even if the procedure was successful.
